pytest

Information Technology > Program testing

Description

Pytest is a powerful testing framework in Python that allows developers to write simple to complex functional and non-functional tests. It supports the creation of small, atomic tests, while also enabling the user to scale up to complex functional testing for applications and libraries. Pytest provides features like 'assert' for checking results, 'fixtures' for setup and teardown code, 'parameterization' for running a test with multiple inputs, and 'marks' for categorizing tests. Advanced users can even write plugins to extend pytest's functionality. With its easy-to-write syntax and rich feature set, pytest helps ensure your code works as expected.

Expected Behaviors

✎
LEVEL 1

Fundamental Awareness

At this level, individuals are expected to understand the basic purpose of pytest and its role in software development. They should be familiar with the structure of a pytest test and know how to define a simple test function. Additionally, they should be able to run tests using pytest and interpret the results.

🌱
LEVEL 2

Novice

Novices should be capable of writing simple test functions and using assert statements to verify outcomes. They should know how to run individual test files and interpret the output from pytest. They should also be able to handle test failures and errors effectively.

🌍
LEVEL 3

Intermediate

Intermediate users should be proficient in grouping tests into classes and using setup and teardown methods for test preparation and cleanup. They should be able to parameterize tests to run with different inputs, skip tests under certain conditions, and mark tests with custom labels.

⭐
LEVEL 4

Advanced

Advanced users should be adept at using fixtures for complex setup and teardown operations, sharing fixtures across multiple test files, and controlling test execution order. They should be able to customize pytest behavior with command line options and integrate pytest with other tools like coverage.py.

🏆
LEVEL 5

Expert

Experts should have the skills to write custom pytest plugins and extend pytest with hooks to add new functionality. They should be able to configure the pytest.ini file for project-specific settings, optimize test execution for large test suites, and debug complex test failures.
