Extensible Markup Language (XML)
Information Technology > Web Server TechnologiesDescription
Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a widely used system for defining data formats. It provides a standardized format for data exchange, as it ensures that data is structured in a way that can be understood by both the sender and the receiver. XML uses tags like HTML, but unlike HTML, XML allows you to define your own set of tags. Skills in XML range from understanding its basic structure and syntax, writing simple documents, validating them using Document Type Definitions (DTD) or XML Schema, to more advanced skills like designing complex schemas, handling errors, optimizing performance, and integrating XML with databases and web services.
Stack
Expected Behaviors
Fundamental Awareness
At this level, individuals are expected to have a basic understanding of what XML is and its purpose. They should be familiar with the structure of an XML document and understand where and why it is used. This is the initial stage of learning XML, where the focus is on gaining theoretical knowledge rather than practical skills.
Novice
Novices can write simple XML documents and understand XML syntax rules. They know about XML elements, attributes, entities, and namespaces. They also understand how to use CDATA in XML. At this stage, they start applying their theoretical knowledge into practice, but still need guidance.
Intermediate
Intermediate users can validate XML documents using DTD or XML Schema and understand XML parsing techniques. They know how to transform XML using XSLT and navigate through elements and attributes in XML using XPath. They also understand how to extract data from XML using XQuery. At this level, they can solve common problems independently.
Advanced
Advanced users can design complex XML Schemas and use advanced XSLT and XPath features. They understand XML serialization and deserialization and know how to use XML processing APIs like SAX, DOM, StAX. They can handle XML errors and exceptions. At this stage, they can manage more complex tasks and troubleshoot issues.
Expert
Experts can optimize XML performance and integrate XML with databases and web services. They understand XML security issues and solutions and know about advanced XML technologies like XLink, XPointer, and XML Signatures. They can design and implement complex XML-based systems. At this level, they can handle any XML-related task and provide solutions to complex problems.
